 The Technology of Quality

(Prediction for Production and the Arts of Charts by Computers)

Description and Purpose

The purpose of this course is to "show and tell" what is old and new, easy and useful, applicable and profitable in the modern art of management science as they apply to problems in industry and business. Today's industrial uses of statistics and computers go far beyond classical statistical process control (SPC) and the classical Shewhart control chart. Modern tools include novel graphical techniques, new charting methods, and statistically designed programs for producing useful information from data.

A window of opportunity presently exists to learn about these new statistical methods. Those that wait will hear about them later by those educated in other countries.

                        Course Outline

1 Role of Statistics; Introduction to Decision Matrix and Real Deal Decision-Making under Uncertainty. Use of computer software, i.e., Minitab, NWA Quality Analyst.

2 Quality Management; the Deming approach to Management. What Deming said to his students and why managers wanted to learn about it more than statisticians do? Other Quality Philosophers, Practices, Tools, Standards. Problem Solving; steps in process improvement.

3 Review of Elementary Statistics; review using methods of Quality Analyst. Why professional users of statistics use specialty software to solve real problems. Graphical methods to understand location, variation and skewness.

4 Process Control Charts; basic Concepts charts, Charts for variables. Many computer applications using Minitab on the PC.

5 Process Control Charts for Variables; mean(xbar) and range charts, X charts, other process control charts. Computer applications using Minitab.

6 Process capability Individual Values compared with averages. The estimation of population variance from sample information. Control limits and specification limits. The 6σ Spread versus Specification limits.

7 Control Charts for Attributes; p, np, c and u charts. Their uses and purpose. Probability distributions that apply to attribute charts.

8 Reliability; Definition and use Measures, programs engineers …

9 Quality Costs  Definition, types, quality costs, cost measurement systems and utilizing knowledge of costs for decision making.

10 Product Liability, Systems, Benchmarking and Auditing.

Student grades will be based on projects and papers. You can expect three such projects/papers. Periodically you will receive messages and you should go to my home page below for additional messages for students. Use of Computers will be required.
