What do Students Have to Say About the URI MBA Programs?
[ Back to the General Information List ]
Below are alumni comments from our Evening Part-time MBA and One Year Full-time MBA programs.
President, Precision Web Marketing
BS Marketing, '94; MBA '97
The education I received at URI's Providence campus provided some of the momentum I needed to launch my businesses, Precision Web Marketing and The Sassy Ladies. In fact, I visualized my marketing company during an entrepreneurship class project, and it is a dream that the business is now growing so fast. There's no doubt that I have URI to thank for laying a solid groundwork for the success I've achieved as a business owner. By the way, I am proud to say I was among the first students to take classes in the Shepard Building the first year it opened. It was such a great setting and a convenient location to be able to take classes right after work. Getting a degree part-time while working full-time is never easy, but it never felt like a chore while I was at URI. I enjoyed my experience there very much.
RDW Group, Inc.
It has been more than a decade since I received my MBA from URI. Today, perhaps more than ever, I draw upon the insights and knowledge I gained during my four years as an evening student. I strongly recommend URI Providence for students and professionals who seek to deepen their understanding and increase their economic potential. In my experience, the course offerings were compelling and convenient, and the faculty broadened my perspective. Completing the program certainly required a lot of hard work, which has paid off in so many ways.
"Highly recommended for the engineer who would like to understand the inner makings of the international business arena for their design work!"
Name: Kristen L. Verduchi, Class of 2001
Company/Title: Clariant Corporation, Process Engineer III (RI)
"Overall, I have found the MBA program stimulating, rewarding and highly beneficial. Coming from a background with no real business training, it offered an excellent primer in business fundamentals as well as the chance to delve more deeply into areas of particular interest. I felt throughout the program that it and my job complemented one another by synergistically offering the opportunity to learn more and generally improve my performance both at work and in class."
Name: Scott Smith, Class of 2005
Company/Title: SEA CORP, Operations Manager
"I am in my second week as the Quality Assurance Manager of Professional Services at VFA; this is not software QA, but of the entire department of engineers and architects. Although my work in the Coast Guard and here at VFA was important in preparing me for this position, I will have to say that I learned the business side from the URI MBA program."
Name: Richard Sasse, Class of 2003
Company/Title: VFA, Quality Assurance Manager of Professional Services
And some quotes taken from student exit surveys:
"When I first considered the MBA program at URI 4 yrs ago, I was looking for a program that would expose me to the entire realm of modern management, but at a convenient location and affordable cost. The expertise and real world experience of the profs far exceeded my expectations."
"Having an engineering degree with no business background except on the job, the program was very effective at providing me with a broad yet in-depth knowledge that will be very useful in the future."
"I chose URI's program because of several colleagues who have graduated from the MBA, EMBA- each of these individuals have advanced their careers because of what they learned."
" I have worked hard these 2&1/2 years. The expectations of the instructors are high and I think that makes the students achieve a level that they didn't think they could reach for. My classmates were professional and provided a culture of trust and responsibility. Everything taught in the program has a practical real time appropriateness to my life and career. Each class provides me with new tools to understand the world in which I work either in more depth or for the first time."
"I sought an education which would supplement my on the job experiences and provide me with the business acumen absent from my undergraduate liberal arts education."
One Year MBA
"After finishing my undergraduate degree in engineering and working in the field of biological research for three years, I needed a change. Many of my friends had entered the business world and it was difficult for me to hold a conversation with them. I realized that I was missing out on a fundamental part of life, so I returned to my home state to attend business school at the University of Rhode Island. I could not have made a better choice.
From the very beginning of the program, I felt a strong sense of community. The full-time MBA program did an amazing job of helping the students get to know each other during the first week and it never let up the entire time through multiple group projects. As I progressed through the program, I realized that I was not only getting a wonderful business education, but I was also getting a fantastic real-world education. I could once again partake in conversations with my friends, not only about business, but about current events. What meant even more to me were the compliments I received from friends and family who said how much more well-rounded I seemed after spending time in business school.
The classroom experience at URI was an educational pleasure. The professors taught with passion and were always there for the students. It was evident that the professors wanted the students to excel. I never thought I would have been enticed by the field of accounting, but after the first semester, I knew it was for me. I applied for a summer internship at PricewaterhouseCoopers which was an amazing experience, and I will start working there full time in July as a tax associate."
Matthew Rogovitz, Class of 2008 (also MSA 2009 from URI)
Company/Title: PricewaterhouseCoopers, Tax Associate
"I applied for the one year MBA program while I was an undergraduate studying Industrial Engineering at the University of Rhode Island. The College of Business and College of Engineering offered a convenient joint program that complimented each academic program very well and made it manageable to get both degrees within 5 years. Building on my background in engineering, the MBA program offered an in-depth and hands on experience to the world of management. With a great emphasis on team projects, I believe I grew not only academically, but also professionally as the program was very similar to a real world business atmosphere."
Brian Dungey, Class of 2008
Company/Title: Northwestern Mutual Financial Network, Financial Representative
"Prior to enrolling in the full-time program, I worked for eight years and felt that an MBA degree would help further develop my business and management skills. By combining learning modules and self-directed projects, the program prepared me for the difficult decisions I now make as a manager. Projects were accomplished in team and individual settings and were designed to mirror workplace environments.
The program truly offers an intense and valuable experience. I have no reservations recommending the Kingston MBA program to those seeking career enhancement."
Name: Tom Pascarella, Class of 2000 (RI)
Company: ICSL Clinical Studies/Director, Business Development
"I enjoyed the program thoroughly and I think above all, it has given me an overall confidence that I can do anything that is set before me. A lot of the skills I learned, such as presentation, negotiation and organization skills have helped me to succeed. For example, I never thought I would be a good presenter, but I actually have had the opportunity to do some traveling and make presentations in front of senior managers. Even those modules I thought I would never have any use for, I am finding that I do use that knowledge base all the time. The valuable skills I learned at URI have helped me rise to the top and put me in a position to be in charge of a multitude or projects within my organization, and has also allowed me to gain the respect of a lot of my peers."
Name: Sue Guerzon, Class of 1995
Company/Title: Fidelity Investments, Participant Services Representative (MA)
"I had the best year of my life. I learned more than I could have ever imagined both inside and out of the classroom. I learned how to be both a team member and an individual while gaining knowledge from the intelligence and uniqueness of the people around me. I am so proud of the education that I received while obtaining my MBA at the University of Rhode Island."
Name: Elizabeth Demers, Class of 2004
U.S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management, Portfolio Analyst (RI)
"Excellent exposure to public speaking and business interaction such as debating issues and negotiating. I have found this is the area where any person interacting with others in today's business world must excel at and feel comfortable with in order to succeed."
