Student Origins
The students in the graduate program in accounting are drawn from many geographical areas and bring the richness of a variety of educational and personal backgrounds to the University. There are presently about 40 graduate students enrolled in the program. For more information concerning student life, visit the University of Rhode Island Just for Students Web site.
Financial Aid
There are several forms of financial assistance available to graduate students, however the majority of our students are supported by their employers, personal savings, or their families. Scholarships are awarded by the Dean of the Graduate School to students who have been nominated by the chairperson of the department. Scholarships normally are not awarded to new students. Graduate assistantships are awarded to full-time graduate students on a competitive basis. Priority is given to students who have an undergraduate accounting degree from an AACSB institution. Assistants are required to work 10 hours per week. Graduate assistants aid the faculty with their instructional and research activities. Graduate assistants receive a stipend and have one-half of their tuition waived. Individuals interested in assistantships should contact Henry Schwarzbach, Director of the Master of Science in Accounting Program. There are also student loan programs. For information see Tuition and Fees.
Success on the CPA and CMA Exams
Although the program is not solely oriented toward preparing graduate students for the professional examinations, students are well prepared to successfully complete either the CPA or CMA exam. Many of our master's students have won either the Rhode Island gold or silver medals, signifying the highest and second highest scores on the CPA exam in the state. Since the May 1999 CPA exam we have had 4 Gold and 1 Silver medal winners, of which 3 were graduates of the Masters program, 1 was an undergraduate and 1 student received both a masters and undergraduate degree from URI.
