STUDENT NEWSLETTER

September 2008

Message From The Assistant Dean....

College can be one of the most exciting and life changing experience of your life, but remember your primary reason for being here is an education.  Maintaining your grades and understanding the study to socializing ratio are key to your success. It may not seem like it now, but your current actions can affect your ability to get a job in the future.  At URI CBA, our objective is to prepare you for success in the world of business.  You can help us in this task by attending classes, asking questions and getting to know your faculty and classmates.

This fall we have an array of events geared towards career exploration in Business.  On October 7th Beta Alpha Psi will be hosting Public Accounting Night.  This event geared for Accounting and Finance majors brings top accounting firms to Ballentine Hall for networking and information gathering.  On October 17th the College of Business will host its second Student Alumni Career Day.  This is an outstanding opportunity for you to meet with successful CBA alumni.  They will share their experiences, provide concrete advice and tell you more about industries of interest.  Finally, during the URI Career Services Fall Job & Career Fair on October 29th in the Ryan Center, CBA will be hosting "Exploring Your Majors in Business".  Not only will you be able to speak with faculty and students but you will also be able to speak to employers hiring students with the major of your interest.

If you are a junior you may want to consider taking part in our Junior Year Experience Career Passport program. This "Junior Year Experience" is a professional development opportunity in which you can make an investment in your career decision-making process. This class is a WebCT seminar with participation in out-of-class learning experiences throughout the semester. As a result of this class you will have the resources and know-how to conduct career and internship exploration, define your career ambitions, and build a professional job and graduate school search toolbox. If you are considering this 1-credit liberal elective, please attend the info sessions on Monday, September 15th at 4:00PM Thomson Board Room, 3rd floor Ballentine Hall or contact Rosie Lalli Malaghan at
rmalaghan@uri.edu for more information.

As the fall semester unfolds, your primary focus should be developing your college skill set and successfully complete the semester with good grades.  Get your studying and work done during the week so you can enjoy all other aspects of a fun filled college experience. Stay healthy, have fun and learn.

Assistant Dean, Peg Ferguson Boyd

CBA Student Alumni Career Day

Friday, October 17th

9:00am - Noon

Mark your calendars for this premier second annual event in the College of Business!  Friday morning BUS classes will be canceled that day so you can attend this event. That is how important we think this event is to help you develop your future careers!

This is your opportunity to learn from CBA Alumni who once were in your shoes.  Find out what it's really like to work on Wall Street. Discover if a career in Financial Advising or Insurance is for you? Learn about if you should go for your MBA now or later? And hear what young alumni have to say regarding internships and job offers.

Career Day will open with two concurrent breakout sessions at 9am and 10am in the Ballentine Hall Verrechia Foyer, followed by our key note speaker Bruce S. Sherman at 11 am. Bruce S. Sherman is Chief Executive Officer, Chief Investment Officer and Senior Portfolio Manager of PCM. He has led PCM's investment research and portfolio management activities since founding the firm in 1986. Prior to PCM's inception, Mr. Sherman worked as an executive for the Collier Family and was involved with their venture capital, media, financial service and real estate investments. Mr. Sherman is a Certified Public Accountant. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Rhode Island and a Master of Business Administration in Finance degree from Bernard Baruch College.
