STUDENT NEWSLETTER

Spring 2008

Message From The Assistant Dean....

It takes a variety of skills to succeed in today's business world.  CEO's across the country agree that strong analytical, creative thinking, conceptual and interpersonal skills are all needed to succeed in business. Your CBA curriculum is designed to build these skills and prepare you academically for success.  However, these skills alone are only a foundation and your college experience is the time to build up from this foundation.

Did you know we have 8 CBA clubs on campus? Each organization: Financial Engineering, Financial Management Association, American Marketing Association, Supply Chain Management, Future Business Leaders of America, Beta Alpha Psi, Entrepreneurship Club and Beta Gamma Sigma, is designed for you to develop career and professional skills. Being an active member of a student organization enables you to tie into the profession of your choice and clarify your career goals.  If you haven't already, join a student club soon. If you are interested in joining a club, see the bulletin board by the back door of Ballentine Hall for contact information.

Did you know that 67% of employers surveyed who hired May 2007 graduates looked for 2 internship experiences on student resumes? Internships (for credit or no credit) are vital to your marketability as a potential candidate.  Put your class room knowledge to work by applying it to an internship in a field of interest.  You may surprise yourself!  Not only do internships give you valuable professional training, they also allow you to make important personal contacts with potential employers - contacts that can result in pre-graduation job offers.

If you are a senior enjoying your last semester, a junior planning for your career or an underclassman just gearing up, take advantage of all the college and university offerings this spring semester.  Persevere! Take initiative and invest in your future by building upon the academic foundation provided by the CBA. You may be happily astounded by the return on your investment.

Assistant Dean, Peg Ferguson Boyd

Apply to be a URI101 Mentor!

Looking for a way to earn 3 liberal elective credits towards your degree while making a difference in the lives of first-year students?  Mentoring is the position for you! See what past mentors have said about the experience:

"I look back upon my URI 101 experiences with nothing but positive remarks.  I can only hope that future generations have the opportunity to experience URI 101 as I have and the positive outcomes that come along with it!"

- Ross Rosengart, Junior, Marketing Major

"The other mentors [in CSV 302] became mentors to me as well; since many of us had classes together, we helped each other study or work through tough homework problems. We taught each other about managing a class and managing our time to prepare for class, we learned different techniques to successfully facilitate and process ice breakers and activities, and we bonded as a group of mentors."

-          Meg Williamson, Senior, Finance Major

"This experience has molded me into the person that I hope to be for the rest of my life.  I am now more punctual, intellectual, and open-minded all because my experience helped me realize that taking on responsibility can only help me grow and develop into a experienced and reliable human being and those qualities can be admired and wanted by any individual I may interact with throughout my life."

-          Lauren Stokes, Sophomore, International Business Major

Consider An Internship!

Five Great Reasons to Consider a Summer Internship:

1.  Add to your resume

·         Have you written your resume lately and noticed that you have no "professional" work experience?

·         Did you know that most employers consider internship experience a critical factor in hiring?

2. Clarify your career goals

  •  Are you unsure of exactly what kind of job you might want to do with your major?
  •   Or, have you wondered whether the career path you've always dreamed of is actually one you'll enjoy?

3. Make valuable contacts

  • Most people find their jobs through networking or through people they already know.  How many people do you know that can help you with your job search?  Meet people through a summer internship.

4. Develop your job search skills

  • Do you have the tools to do a comprehensive job search?  Searching for an internship can take you through the steps of a job search without so much pressure.

5. Gain academic credit and/or possibly get paid

  •  Did you know that you could possibly get paid for your internship AND receive academic credit at the same time?
