Message From
The Dean....
|
|
While a new school year begins some things remain the
same, freshman wandering around in a strange and exciting new
environment and the realization by seniors that this it - and I need to
find a job. Although the same things happen every year the students who
are experiencing these "annual" events change, the changes
that have been made at the university and within the College make each
year different. That is what makes my job so exciting and
interesting. Two major university announcements have happened this
month. The first is the University has unveiled its new branding
campaign featuring the tag line -- "Think Big. We Do".
I encourage you to go the URI homepage http://www.uri.edu/ for a
look at the revised webpage and for more information on the branding
campaign. The second major news item is after 18 years President
Carothers announced that he will be stepping down as President at the
end of the academic year. A search committee, chaired by
CVS/Caremark CEO Thomas Ryan, has been appointed and the goal is to
have a new president in place by July 1, 2009.
It is hard to believe that I am beginning my 3rd year as Dean of the College of Business Administration. Over
the past two years, through the hard work of the faculty, we have
restructured the curriculum, developed the innovative "Blue
MBA" that allows students to graduate with an MBA and a Masters in
Oceanography degree, created this newsletter and have instituted a
number of initiatives to better prepare students for successful
careers. The changes to our curriculum have begun to bear
fruit. In June, four of our finance students sat for the CFA
Level 1 exam and I am pleased to report three of these students
successfully completed the exam. As discussed later in the
newsletter, our Supply Chain Management major earned Certification in
Transportation and Logistics from the American Society of
Transportation and Logistics. The College is one of only 22 US
universities with this distinction.
The response to the newsletter has been tremendous. Thanks to
your emails more of you are becoming engaged in the college by speaking
in classes, providing internships to our students and assisting them in
securing jobs. It has also provided the opportunity for alumni to
reconnect with each other so please continue to let us know what is
happening in your life.
I hope that you will contact your friends and fellow alumni and come
back to visit campus Homecoming Weekend. The College of Business
will be part of Rhodyville, a tent village,
located by the Meade Field south entrance, in front of Tootell, Keaney Gym, and Mackal Field House. There will be prizes for
the most creatively decorated tent, best tent activity, and the best
tent sign! Come out and help decorate the our
tent. You can make it a complete Rhody
day by attending the URI Distinguished Achievement Award dinner that
evening at the Westin Hotel in Providence.
That evening the College will be honoring this year's inductees to the College of Business Administration Hall of Fame,
Deborah Ciolfi '80, Stephen Hopkins '79 and
Richard Vangermeersch '64. Bruce
Sherman '69, Chief Executive Officer of Private Capital Management will
be one of four University recipients of the Distinguished Achievement
Award. Additional information about Rhodyville
and the Distinguished Achievement Award dinner are in the newsletter.
This issue's Alumni Spotlight focuses on Donald P. Lan,
a 1974 accounting graduate who has established the Spencer Martin
Endowed Scholarship Fund for Accounting Students. As Don
indicates in the article, he is indebted to Spencer for his assistance
and hopes that others who were inspired by Spencer will contribute to
the fund. Our student spotlight highlights not only three
outstanding marketing students but also reflects the work of our
internship coordinator, Amy Weinstein. Amy is securing great
internship opportunities for our students and the three students
highlighted are just an example of the summer internships. Also
in the newsletter is an article on Marketing Professor Ruby Roy Dholakia, who was the co-chair of the Branding
Committee. Continuing with our Marketing theme, our "What
Happened To" features Professor Emeritus M. Ven
Venkatesan. You will find other
information about the College and your former classmates. As
always, I welcome your feedback and I hope to see you Homecoming
Weekend.
Wishing you all the best,
Mark Higgins

Professor Ruby Roy Dholakia
Dr. Ruby
Roy Dholakia has been a member
of the College
of Business faculty
since 1981, when she joined URI as an Associate Professor of
Marketing. Born in India, educated in the United States (B.S. and
MBA from Haas School of Business, University of California,
Berkeley and Ph.D. from Kellogg Graduate School of Management,
Northwestern University), Professor Dholakia
brings her world views and experience to her teaching, research and
service.
Recognized for
her teaching (Tom Chisholm Graduate Teaching Award, 2007), she has
taught a variety of courses. At the undergraduate level, she
bridges theory and practice by inviting industry speakers and involving
students in projects that offer different learning experiences.
For several years, marketing students participated in semester long
projects that entailed developing, implementing and evaluating a
marketing communications campaign on campus for companies such as
Citibank, Ford Motors and General Motors. Although students claim she
is demanding and expects a lot, to quote some, "Ruby is
awesome!" and "I always learn so much from her in all her
courses". She has been one of the original supporters of the
Ph.D. program at the College of Business Administration and continues
to supervise cutting edge dissertation topics such as Interactive
Advertising (Fortin 1998), Online Information Search (Chiang 2002),
Online Shopping (Zhao 2005), Privacy and Online Information Provision (Norberg 2005), and Mobile Advertising (Banerjee 2007). Over the years, she has
taught international programs in Japan,
Finland, Bangladesh, and India;
and lectured in many other countries.
At the College
of Business, Ruby
is one of the leaders in research. She received the CBA Dean's
Excellence Award for Research in 2006 and URI Excellence in Research
Award for 1999-2000. She has published widely and presented her
research at many conferences nationally and internationally. She
is the editor and co-editor of several books that examine the
relationships between marketing and technology, including M-commerce:
Global Experiences and Perspectives (2005); Global E-Commerce and
Online Marketing: Watching the Evolution (2001); New Infotainment
Technologies in the Home: Demand-Side Perspective, (1996); and Marketing
Strategies for Information Technologies (1994). She is currently
working on a book focusing on how household technologies have
transformed consumer behavior. Because of her widely known research
interests in technology and marketing, scholars from many countries
such as Brazil, Denmark, Germany,
Finland, and Korea have spent time at the College of Business and contributed to
its global outreach.
Dr. Dholakia is committed to serving URI and
the marketing discipline community, locally as well as internationally.
Recently, she co-chaired the URI Branding Committee that developed a
strategic communications plan to strengthen URI's
position as a distinguished research university. Elements of the
plan are being implemented and have received wide acclaim. She has
organized and chaired conferences at the national and international
level and served as the first President of the International Society of
Market and Development that brings together scholars and administrators
who are interested in the micro and macro relationships between
marketing and development. In Fall 2009, she will be one of three
coordinators for the Honors Colloquium on "Demystifying
India" that will attempt to improve the URI community's
understanding of this ancient civilization and fast growing modern
economy.
Ruby is married to Nikhilesh Dholakia, also a Professor of Marketing at CBA and
has two children - a son and a daughter. She was a long time
resident of Wakefield,
R.I. but has recently
moved to coastal Narragansett. She loves to travel and would like
to go to the moon if it was affordable and she did not have to kill
herself to get in shape for the space flight.

Student Spotlights: Summer Interns
|
|
Ever wonder
what students do during their summer internships? Below are
some stories from URI undergraduate marketing students.
Emily Anderson
This past summer I was given the opportunity to intern at Victoria's Secret Direct in mid-town Manhattan. The
two months I spent at VSD with the Creative Interface Team gave me the
tools and building blocks to excel in my classes at URI and in future
internships.
Although my focus is marketing, my internship did not incorporate as
much marketing as I thought it would. The Creative Interface team is
the liaison between the merchants, editing, creative, and pagination
teams. I learned about marketing space in the catalogs depending on the
seasons and what products are selling the best and worst. I also
tracked product purchases after a set number of consecutive
weeks in circulation. My main project for the summer was working
with all the Merchant teams and the PR team to decide which clothing
pieces they wanted to highlight for the fall/winter press release. This
was difficult and challenging at times because I had to communicate and
compromise with many people in different departments, but in the end
when I attended the press release, I was proud of all my work and
understood the bigger picture.
After I graduate in May 2010, I would like to eventually work in a
metropolitan area, either Boston or New York, in a
business that allows me to utilize my marketing skills. The business
does not have to be specific to retail, but I enjoy the extra creative
atmosphere that retail businesses have to offer.
Annie Kane
This past summer I spent almost all of my time in New York City
interning at Reader's Digest for the Home and Garden group. While I was
there, I had been assigned a number of different responsibilities with
the Marketing team, and came in at a busy time so there was a lot to
do. Every summer the Home and Garden group hosts their National Sales
meeting; and countless efforts needed to be focused on making sure
everything from PowerPoint Presentations, accommodations and Swag
Bags are made to perfection. I had a huge role in making this happen.
The marketing team was also in a transition stage of recreating many
sales pieces that were sent out to prospective clients. Making
these changes with fresh and new ideas was something I was part of.
Beyond this, I attended weekly meetings with the entire publishing
group where I had first-hand experience in the steps needed for a
magazine to get published and make money at the same time.
The experience of working and living in Manhattan was one of the best
experiences and internships I could ever ask for. Everyone I met and
worked with definitely made the internship and the summer a memorable
one and I look forward to going back and visiting. After college I plan
on working for a few years before heading back to school for my MBA,
preferably in a large city, whether it be New York or
LA.

Deanna Rosenberg
During the summer of 2008 I was a marketing intern under
the marketing director at FUJIFILM USA
in Valhalla, New York. I worked there last summer
and over my 2007 winter break. My internship provided me with
great real-world experience and allowed me the opportunity to explore
the many areas of marketing.
FUJIFILM USA
is a well known corporation that operates on a smaller scale than other
companies. As a result, I worked with a wide variety of
individuals and had a diverse range of responsibilities. Some
responsibilities included filling out forms for daily operations,
helping create and organize a marketing binder, participating in marketing
research, and working with creative services to create many sell
sheets. My collection of responsibilities allowed me to gain knowledge
about creative marketing, marketing research, and managing a marketing
plan. I appreciated the many opportunities afforded me because
they allowed me to figure out which field of marketing I would like to
focus on in the future.
In the future my goal is to obtain a job with a large company in the
creative marketing department. I really enjoyed my time working
on creative projects and found that I excelled in this area. In
the future, I plan on attending graduate school and receive an
MBA. My internship at FUJIFILM USA was rewarding and
successful, and I was asked to return during winter break.

Donald P. Lan , Jr. '74
Attorney,
Officer & Director Kroney Morse Lan, PC
Texas Monthly
Magazine voted Don Lan '74, a "Texas
Super Lawyer" in 2003 through 2008, and was listed in
"D" Magazine's 2007 and 2008 "Best Lawyers in Dallas"
issues as well. His specialty is in the areas of tax controversy,
estate planning, and business and tax planning. Don credits his success
to a couple of factors - URI being one of them. Specifically, he
credits Professor of Accounting, Spencer Martin, as one of the
professors who had a tremendous impact on him during his undergraduate
years.
Don wanted to honor his former "favorite" professor by
establishing the "Spencer J. Martin Endowed Scholarship Fund for
Accounting Students". The endowment will be used to support
accounting students with demonstrated financial need entering their
junior year.
"Spencer Martin had a deep and profound impact on me as a student
at URI. He instilled in me the confidence to believe in myself;
that I could not only master accounting, but anything I desired to
achieve in life. His mentoring has contributed to my success as
an accounting student, later when I entered the workforce fresh out of
law school and to this day - more than three decades later. In
honoring Professor Martin, I hope to provide opportunities to the
students of today, making their experiences as memorable and meaningful
as my own."
Don's hope is that others will be inspired to make additional
contributions to this fund. To contribute, please contact:

What Happened To?
|
|
Prof. M. Ven Venkatesan
I came
to the College
of Business to
be the Chairman of the Marketing Department 20 years ago. Before
retiring in June 2007, I tried the retirement lifestyle for three
years. The first year while half time at URI, I
taught at the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras, India,
as a Fulbright Lecturer, for one semester, teaching International
Strategic Management to IIT engineering students. It was such a
pleasure because the students came well prepared and every outside book
and article was read before I had a chance to ask them! During
the second year, for one semester I taught at the Consortium of U.S.
Universities' School, run by the University
of Kansas at Paderno del Grappa, (Veneto)
Italy, an hour
northwest from Venice.
In the third year of half-time teaching at URI, I had an occasion to
spend a semester in Armenia.
Visiting these institutions was fun. It gave us a chance to travel in India, in Armenia
and in Italy.
We went to Goa, and Ajanta and Ellora Caves
in India, traveled
in Armenia,
including going to Nagorno Karabakh, a newly formed state next to Azerbaijan.
In italy, we went to see the Ice Man (500
years old!) at Bolzano, Italy, and to Cinque Terre for hiking and
Bologna for excellent Italian food. Of course being close to the
beautiful city of Venice, we went to
that city so many times when there were
no tourists around and engaged in tasting good Veneto wines!
Since retiring from URI, I have been busy. We visit our
grandchildren in San Francisco
several times each year and spend the holidays there with my sons and
their families. While I am in Saunderstown, I do gardening
each morning. It is a peaceful time; gives me time to think and
meditate and also get to see the tangible results of my
handiwork! The typical busy day includes going to the gym for
some aerobic exercises and weight training. The remainder of
the day, I get to read the books that I had not been able to for lack
of time. The recent ones being Footprints
of the Gods (about the evolution of Peru and South
America and the maps with longitudes and latitudes long before the
western world knew of those things!), reading Donna Leon's
detective novels set in Venice and practicing my language skills in
Spanish for an hour a day as a preparation for our travel into South
America. I have so many books on my list to read, it will
probably take another year to finish them!
Talking about travel, we traveled all over Turkey,
Jordan and the
magnificent Petra Caves (you must have seen them in Indiana
Jones movies) and Egypt
- from Pyramids to Abu Simbel.
We are planning a trip to Quebec City in
September this year and are scheduled to go to Machu Pichu, Peru in November.
After these travels, it will be time to get back to teaching. I have
been invited by a couple of universities and Institutes in India, and the French
Business School
in Paris.
I donate my time in teaching courses in India. I am hoping to
go to MonterreyTec,
Mexico
to teach in the Spring in their well-known international programs.
. Who knows -this may lead to our going to Argentina, Chile and Galapagos next
year to teach for a few weeks! Then the rest of the time we can
take a leisurely tour of these places which had been on our list for a
long time.
Retirement is fun! Never thought it would be this much fun!

College of Business Earns
Certification
|
|
Continuing to work ahead of the curve, the College of Business Administration has
earned Certification in Transportation and Logistics from the American
Society of Transportation and Logistics.
URI earned the certification just one year after the supply chain
management major was created at the school. It is the first New England
university - the 22nd U.S. university overall - to be able to offer the
certification to its students, joining such schools as The Ohio State
University, the University of Maryland, The Pennsylvania State
University and the University of Tennessee.
The American Society of Transportation certification is the second
major certification program URI has earned in the last year. In
November of 2007, URI became the 13th U.S. university to be named
a Chartered Financial Analyst Program Partner by the CFA Institute. URI
and Michigan
State University
are the only schools certified by both organizations.
"The schools that have the blanket certification are all leading
business schools in the country," said Doug Hales, URI assistant
professor of supply chain management. "This is a fast-growing
industry, and URI is certainly ahead of the curve in the New England region."
URI supply chain management students can earn their certification upon graduation
if they take electives within the major.
"Many companies prefer this certification as a contingency for
employment," Hales said. "New graduates from our program will
be more attractive because they already have their certification, and
they will have more real-world experience in their field."
When it created the supply chain management major, URI created an
advisory council with executives from several major companies,
including CVS Caremark, Hasbro, Ocean Spray and Coastal Extreme Brewing
Co. URI also works with other companies, such as Richmond-based Vibco Vibrators, Inc.
Through connections made with those companies, URI students are able to
get strong internships in the field.
The supply chain management major began at URI in the fall of 2007.
Made possible through a grant received by the URI Transportation
Center, the major
encompasses the strategic planning, design, operations and improvement
of all activities involved in the procurement, manufacture and delivery
of goods and services to meet customer requirements.
The American Society of Transportation and Logistics - the certifying
agency - has a Chinese branch, giving URI an affiliation on an
international scale.
"Customers in the supply chain management industry are global.
Suppliers are global," Hales said. "That is how our students
think. We can't just think nationally."
URI has 25 students who have declared supply chain management as a
major, including six incoming freshmen. Eventually the program could
have up to 50 students participating.
In August, Jennifer Wilcoxon
became the first student to earn the degree from URI, and within days
of completing her coursework accepted a job with Raytheon Co. A double
major in international business and supply chain management, Wilcoxon had multiple job offers, including one
from The Boeing Co.
"There are exciting job opportunities in this field," Hales
said. "The work we are doing shows that our students are being
well trained and ready to enter the workforce."

MBA Students
Study Abroad
|
|

|
|
During Summer 2008, five MBA students in our one-year Kingston program took part in
a new experience called the Global MBA and Leadership
Program. Four members of the Global University 8 Consortium (the
GU8) collectively offer this program which involves classroom lectures,
industrial site visits, and case analysis work done over two weeks'
study at each university location. The four members of the
GU8 participating in this program are URI; University
of Le Havre, France;
Xiamen University, China; and Inha University, Korea.
Corporate site visits were taken to: CVS/Pharmacy,
Hasbro Corporation, Ocean Spray, and Shaw's during the URI
portion; the Port of Le Havre, Total, and Bacardi Group during the
French portion; Kinglong Automotive Ltd, Septwolves-Clothing Ltd, Xiamen International Port,
and Xiamen Leisure Yacht Club during the Chinese portion; and Samsung
Electronics, Korean Airlines, and LG Electronics during the Korean
portion of the program.
The objective of this program is to work within existing business
management degrees to educate future leaders while promoting
cross-cultural understanding, sustainable economic development,
corporate ethics, and social responsibility. During 2008,
applications for the URI participants were taken from the One Year
MBA program, however the selection
process will be expanded in 2009 and beyond. Five students were
chosen from each university in order that students would work together
on case study materials in five groups of four members each. The
student resident in the location at the time in question serves as the
leader for each case study team. The Global MBA coursework began
on June 21 in Rhode Island and ended
on August 18 in Korea.
"Students in this inaugural year of the GMBA Program clearly
valued the opportunity for worldwide experience and cross-cultural
collaboration-and so will their employers," says Dr. Judy Beckman,
Professor of Accounting and Secretary-General of the GU8 Consortium
under the leadership of its Council of Presidents Chair, URI President
Dr. Robert L. Carothers. "This program is unique among MBA international
components in providing an opportunity for students to experience
several different cultures and also to work in teams across these
several cultures at once. The program will expand in the future."
Christopher Sao, one of the URI MBA students who took
part in the program believes "The Global MBA program is an amazing
opportunity to experience the world with your new international
friends. Developing these new networks allows for all individuals
to experience a foreign country with the guide of the local
people. You get to discover the local lives of the countrymen you
would have missed as a typical tourist. You see the truth,
the good and the bad. In addition to exploration, you develop
business connections and the opportunity to work in an international
corporation."
Other GU8 universities interested in developing similar programs
include RMIT University in Melbourne,
Australia; University of Haifa, Israel;
and Meiji University,
Japan. For
more information on the GU8 Consortium, see http://www.uri.edu/gu8/
