[ Back to the General Information List ]

The information presented here is intended to give MBA Candidates an overview of selected policies and regulations of the University of Rhode Island's MBA Program. The information is not intended to be all encompassing. Each graduate student is responsible for learning the requirements as printed in the Graduate Student Manual. Any questions should be directed to the Director of the MBA Program or any member of the Graduate Program Office staff at +1 (401) 874-5000.

  1. INITIAL COURSE SELECTION : Prior to registration for the first semester, each student should contact the Coordinator for assistance in determining eligibility for waivers and selection of first semester course work.
  2. WAIVER POLICY : The waiver policy includes the stipulation that any courses waived from the MBA Program of Study (POS) must be taken within the last 5 years, and the grade received must be a "B" (3.00) or better. Students may waive certain course work by passing waiver exams. Waiver exams are available for MBA 500, MBA 504 and MBA 505. Waivers reduce the total number of required credits in the program. A minimum of 36 credits is required for any POS.
  3. PROGRAM OF STUDY / ELECTIVES : Prior to the end of his/her first semester, each student is required to meet with the Coordinator and prepare a Preliminary POS that includes a list of intended electives. This POS is submitted to the Graduate School for approval of waivers, transfers, and intended study. Students may not register for electives prior to submitting a POS to the Graduate School. Throughout the program, the student is required to discuss and update the POS with the Coordinator. A final, signed POS for the semester the student intends to graduate is required.
  4. TRANSFER POLICY : Students may transfer a maximum of 20% of their POS credit hours into the MBA program at URI. All transfer work must have been completed within the past 5 years at an AACSB accredited school. All transfers must be approved by the MBA Director and the Graduate School.
  5. CONTINUOUS ENROLLMENT : Each student must remain continuously enrolled throughout his/her graduate studies until all requirements are complete and a degree is awarded. This does not include the summer sessions, except for those students who plan to graduate or are required to take summer courses. Students who must leave the University have the following options:

    1. LEAVE OF ABSENCE (LOA)

Students who must leave for one semester or more due to military duty, prolonged illness, or other unusual circumstances must apply for a Leave of Absence. Application for an LOA is made to the Coordinator of the MBA Program and must be approved by the Graduate School. You are allowed to take an LOA for a total of 4 semesters during the time in which a degree is earned. An LOA must be applied for by the student at the beginning of the semester for which it is being requested, prior to the last day to ADD classes in that semester.
    2. CONTINUOUS REGISTRATION (CRG 999)

Once students have completed all of the course work specified in their POS, they must register each semester until they graduate, or they will be considered to be voluntarily withdrawn from graduate status. This includes students who receive an "Incomplete" (I) in a course that must be completed prior to graduation. Also, this includes students who are taking courses at another AACSB school, and who intend to transfer these courses to URI to gain eligibility for graduation.
    3. WITHDRAWAL

Students who do not register for a term, do not comply with the regulations governing withdrawal or LOA, and do not pay the continuous registration fee will be assumed to have voluntarily withdrawn from the University. A student who wishes to return to complete their degree must apply for re-enrollment, and their entire record is subject to review. Also, they must pay, retroactively, the CRG 999 fees for every semester for which they have not been enrolled. Re-enrollment is not granted automatically.
  6. TIME LIMIT : MBA students are expected to meet all program requirements within 5 calendar years after the date when the candidate is first enrolled as a graduate student at the University. A student carrying 9 to 15 credit hours is considered full-time. Part-time students may request an extension of the time limit, up to 7 years, but must have a specific plan for completion when doing so.
  7. SCHOLASTIC STANDING : Each candidate is required to maintain an average of "B" (3.00) or better in all course work. If a "B" (3.00) is not maintained, the candidate's status will be reviewed immediately. Such review may result in the student being placed on provisional status, suspended, or dismissed. Students who are permitted to continue on provisional status must achieve a cumulative average of "B" (3.00) or better in graduate level course work during the next semester (9 credits for part-time students). A course with a failing grade that has been retaken or replaced will be considered taken for a "no program credit", but will remain on the student's transcript. Also, the grade will be included in calculating the quality point average. Required courses must be retaken and electives must be retaken or replaced by a course approved by the Graduate Programs Office and the Dean of the Graduate School.

Any incomplete "I" grades assigned to graduate students must be removed within one calendar year. If the grade "I" is not removed within one calendar year, it will remain on the transcript but may not be used for program credit. The class will then be repeated.

    1. COURSES NUMBERED 500 OR ABOVE A grade of "C" (2.00) or better shall be credited toward the degree. A grade of "C-" (1.67) is considered unacceptable.
    2. COURSES NUMBERED BELOW 500 A grade of "B-" (2.67) or better is required to carry graduate credit. A grade of "C+" (2.33) or lower for a course below the 500 level is considered unacceptable. The candidate must either retake the course and earn an acceptable grade or take another course in its place.
  8. PETITION TO GRADUATE : Each MBA candidate is required to file a petition to graduate early in the semester in which s/he intends to graduate. If for any reason, a candidate is not permitted to graduate in the semester in which s/he first petitions, the petition will be withdrawn and must be resubmitted by the student. Forms are available at the MBA Web site or the Graduate Programs Office (contact).
